Ruth Mueller Jones (94), of Kennedy Heights in Cincinnati died April 21, 2015 at Deupree House. Ruth is survived by daughters Patricia Jones-Reed and Marilyn Jones Goodman, grandson Eric Reed (Meghan), great-grandchildren Alexandra, Logan and Olivia, all of Columbus, 11 nieces and nephews, and her dog Mandie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Jones, parents, Ethel and Robert Mueller, sisters Betty Haungs and Dorothy "Dottie" Braun, brother Robert "Syl" Mueller, and nephew Steven Haungs.
Ruth joined the Girl Scouts at age 10, and earned the Golden Eaglet, the highest level at that time. She was a leader of Troop 141 from 1940-1970 and served as a trainer for many years. In 1962, she was selected to serve as a Girl Scout Ambassador to England for 3 months. She was eventually awarded the Thanks Badge as an outstanding volunteer. She also served on the Great Rivers Girl Scout Council Board for many years. In 1991, she received the Woman of Distinction Award for strong initiative, individual integrity and personal leadership in meeting vital community needs.
Ruth graduated from Lockland High School a year early. When Ruth attended the University of Cincinnati, she was tapped for Mortar Board and became a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honorary. She was a cheerleader for 2 years. At age 21, she attained her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, and was awarded the C-Ring as UC's outstanding female graduate. She continued to support UC and was an ardent fan of the Cincinnati Bearcats, attending games into her 90's.
During World War II, Ruth worked in the offices of the Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical plant in Lockland, Ohio. She married Harry E. Jones in 1946 and had 2 daughters. After the death of her husband in 1967, she attained a Master's Degree in Community Planning from UC, and became a Certified Planner in the American Planning Association. Her professional accomplishments include being Associate Director of the Hamilton County Community Mental Health Board, Assistant to the District Manager of District One of the Ohio Department of Mental Health, and Assistant to the Superintendent of Pauline Warfield Lewis Center, now Summit Behavioral Healthcare.
At All Saints Episcopal Church, Ruth taught Sunday school and served as a vestry member and lay reader. She became active in the Diocese of Southern Ohio in 1966 as the Co-Chair of the Cincinnati area Episcopal Church Women's Board. She went on to serve on numerous committees, most notably the Commission on National and World Mission, of which she was Chair for 10 years, developing and nurturing a relationship with Nigeria. During her tenure as Chair, she arranged 2 visits from Archbishop Desmond Tutu so he could work with the Commission and meet the people of Cincinnati at a public event. She represented the Diocese on the national Episcopal Council for Global Mission. As a member of the Standing Committee of the Diocese, she consulted with former Bishop Thompson on a regular basis. They worked together to advocate for the creation of the Global Episcopal Mission Network. After her 1985 retirement from the State of Ohio, she worked for the Diocese as a Planning Consultant, Secretary to Convention and Registrar until 1991. Subsequently, she did volunteer work at her parish, served on the Board of Episcopal Retirement Homes, and wrote some meditations that were published in the August 1995 Forward Day by Day.
In addition to her Girl Scout and church work, she served for many years as a host for the International Visitors Center. At various times in her life, Ruth enjoyed sewing, baking Christmas cookies, camping, playing piano, reading and caring for the beloved dogs she had throughout the years. She traveled to all 50 states and over 25 countries.
Visitation is from 3:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 1 at Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home, 5501 Montgomery Road, Norwood, OH 45212. The funeral will take place at All Saints Episcopal Church at 6301 Parkman Place in Cincinnati, OH 45213 at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2. She will be laid to rest following the service at Rest Haven Memorial Park, 10209 Plainfield Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45241.

Ruth Jones was born August 2, 1920 before women got the vote, and lived to see women be Mayor of Cincinnati, U.S. Senators, U.S. Supreme Court Justices and even run for President. She was devoted to her family, UC, the Girl Scouts, and the Episcopal Church and its Global Mission, and through her service to them, she made a difference.
