LAPLANT
Mary Lou (nee Lahiff), beloved wife of James "Jim" LaPlant for nearly 59 years. Passed away Monday, November 3, 2014 at Bethesda North Hospital surrounded by her family. Loving and proud mother of five children, Michael (Lisa) of Cincinnati, Mary (Kirk) McHugh of Columbus, Thomas (Roberta) of Cincinnati, Ann (Vernon) Kalb of Milwaukee, WI, and David (Stacy) of Florence, KY; grandmother of six grandchildren, Katie and Monica LaPlant, Kelsey and Margaret McHugh, Jacob LaPlant, and Emma LaPlant. Mary Lou was born April 20, 1931 to Alvin J. Lahiff and Beatrice M. King in Marinette ,WI. She was the daughter between two brothers, Patrick and Jim. Their mother died in 1942 and their mother's best friend, Charlotte Guay, married Alvin and helped raise the family. Mary Lou attended Our Lady of Lourdes elementary and high school, graduating in 1949. After high school, she was a legal secretary and after a short time became personnel secretary for Scott Paper Company in Marinette. Mary Lou and Jim were united in marriage November 26, 1955 at our Lady of Lourdes Church in Marinette. Mary Lou was a loyal supporter and partner in Jim's career as a school administrator and later professor with stops in St. Clair, MN; Wittenberg, WI; Abbotsford, WI; Madison, WI; Austin, TX; Nashville, TN; and Cincinnati, OH. Mary Lou continued to use her skills with numerous short time positions including taking temporary assignments at General Electric after the kids were in school. Mary Lou also enjoyed taking college classes at Peabody College and the University of Cincinnati when the spirit and time permitted. Jim and Mary Lou inherited the Lahiff family cottage on the shores of Green Bay which became a focal point of their family growing up as she and the "kids" spent summers there. After retirement, they built a home there and spent about five months a year there. In addition to her husband and family, Mary Lou is survived by one brother, Jim (Ruth) of Athens, GA.; her brother, Pat, preceded her in death in November 2013; three sisters-in-law, Joan Barry, Nora LaPlant, Jean (Dan) Gruszynski ; brother-in-law, Robert (Dorothy); and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at St. Matthias Church, 1050 West Kemper Road in Forest Park on Friday, November 7, 2014 from 9:00 AM until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. After cremation the ashes will be interred at the Forest Home Mausoleum in Marinette, WI at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Vincent DePaul Society, or a charity of your choice.
