Makoto Ignatius Nikaidoh

June 8, 1966 — March 31, 2024

Cincinnati

Makoto Ignatius Nikaidoh passed away in his sleep on March 31, the year of our Lord 2024 at the age of 57 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born on June 8, 1966, Makoto, the self-proclaimed “raconteur and bon vivant, Man About Town, and sometime “abacchiato” led a full life. From humble beginnings on the northwest side of Evanston, Makoto was many faces to many people as a father, husband, son, brother, cousin, uncle, friend, thespian, classmate, parishioner, and colleague. All who were fortunate to meet him were able to experience the elan with which he approached engaging others and the joie de vivre he sought.

He embraced the simple pleasures of life such as watching a pitchers’ duel at Wrigley Field on a humid Chicago summer afternoon and the most complex concepts reconciling religion, politics and the human experience.

He attended Carleton College as well as Loyola University, eventually graduating from Xavier University in Cincinnati. His philosophical humanist research and pursuit of a greater understanding of the Catholic Church’s teachings were never ending.

His passing brings all who knew him great sorrow but we can be offered some solace with the memories we hold of him and knowing he has been brought great peace.

He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Duffy, his brother Hitoshi Nikaidoh, and his stepfather Edward Francis Duffy; he is survived by his father Dr. Hisashi Nikaidoh, his stepmother Lynn Nikaidoh, his siblings Takashi (Miri), Kimi (Nick), Ken (Lindsey) Nikaidoh, and Edward Stewart Duffy, his children, James and Isaac Nikaidoh, his former wife Leah Nikaidoh, as well as many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Friday, April 19, 2024 at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 5935 Pandora Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45213. It will also be livestreamed from Nativity’s website Live
