Kenneth McWhorter

MCWHORTER, Kenneth Edward, died February 17, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born July 2, 1946, Ken was the son of Chester and Hallie McWhorter. He attended Miami University, receiving both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree in Education.  Ken spent his career in education with Reading Community Schools, teaching social studies, history and government, and human behavior.  He also served in administration as assistant principal and principal at Reading Jr./Sr. High School and was much beloved by students, staff, and the community. Ken retired from Reading in 2004 and began teaching and supervising student teachers in the Education Department at Xavier University. Ken was a staunch Democrat, sharing his viewpoints with everyone and volunteering with many local and national campaigns over the years. In his spare time, Ken was a long-time member of Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church and spent much time in service to the church and congregation. He was a devoted member of the bass section of the church choir.  He was also passionate about his neighborhood, serving on Pleasant Ridge Community Council and acting as a tireless volunteer for many Ridge Day celebrations. An avid baseball fan, Ken spent many years umpiring high school baseball in the greater Cincinnati area. Ken is survived by his wife, Deborah (nee Berger), daughter Allison McGrath (Beau), and son Thomas McWhorter. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his grandchildren, Madeleine and Colin McGrath, his sister, Deborah Celenza (Rick), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Judith McGuire.  Friends may greet the family on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church, 5950 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45213 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Funeral service will follow at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church Special Music Fund.
