ZAKOWSKI, Joseph B. (1921-2015) died peacefully on September 3, 2015 in Cincinnati. He was devoted to his family and community, building the BIL ballpark and serving as president of the Hanover Township Taxpayer’s Association before battling multiple sclerosis for over five decades. Raised on a farm in Lake Silkworth, he loved organic gardening, travelling, swing music, polkas, free thinking, and science. He served in the artillery in World War II and was awarded the bronze star. He worked as a radar inspector at the Tobyhanna Army Depot and also as an automobile repairman, machinist, miner, and carpenter. Preceded in death by Aldona, his wife of 71 years, and sister, Mildred Herner, he is survived by his daughter Dorothy Varchol and her husband Brinley Varchol of Cincinnati, son Joseph J. Zakowski of Mountaintop, four grandchildren, Christine Rybak, Karen Worley, Lisa Perron, Amy Zakowski, seven great-grandchildren, Ciera, Brooke, Jesse, Sarah, Anthony, Mia, Ada, and two sisters, Patricia Paraschak and Florence Sadowski. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the healthcare staff at Dearborn Home-Based Primary Care, Cincinnati VA Medical Center, and Hospice of Cincinnati. In honoring Joseph’s wishes, a private burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery.
