John Gerke

d. March 19, 2014

John (Jack) Morgan Gerke of West Chester, OH; beloved husband of Nancy (Goller) Gerke passed away peacefully at his home on March 19, 2014 at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Eugenia Gerke and sister Joan (Paul) Imwalle. Dear brother of Claire (Russell) Clements and Sr. Doris Gerke, OSC. Loving father of Greg (Amber) Gerke; Mary Ann (Ed) Campbell; Susan (Jim) Renner; Steven (Maria) Gerke, MD; and Kevin (Jessica) Gerke. Loving grandfather of Ryan Cox, Zachary and Drew Gerke; Grant and Robin Campbell; Danny, Patrick, and Stephanie Renner; William and Thomas Gerke; Preston and Audrey Uhlmansiek. Devoted stepfather of Vicki (Steve) Summerly; Julie (Tony) Perrino; and Kecia Sears. Loving step-grandfather of Katie (Ryan) Donahue; Bill (Lacey) Summerly; Gina and Sophia Perrino; Samantha and Andy Sears. Dear step-great-grandfather of Madilyn and Amelia Donahue and many nieces and nephews.

Jack attended Elder High School in Price Hill from 1951 through 1955. He also attended Xavier University, graduating in 1959.

Jack served honorably in the United States Air Force for six years and continued his love of aviation throughout his life. He was a voracious reader of anything aeronautical and loved to build his own flying machines. Jack was also a member of the Greater Cincinnati Radio Control Club.

He was also an avid collector of miniature train memorabilia and would spend hours delighting his children and grandchildren with miles and miles of noisy whistles and smoke stack magic only to watch their eyes come alive in merriment.

Not only was Jack a devoted family man, he was also a great lover of all animals and nature. He loved tending to his garden and was known for his prize winning tomatoes. Jack was committed to making sure that his beloved wild birds were fed every day even during the worst storms. Every spring he was excited to see his birds returning to their trees in his back yard where they knew they were welcome to visit and have a meal from one of his many bird feeders.

Jack enjoyed life as well as any man should, and he lived it to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by all of the great many who love him. Visitation will be held March 24, 9:30-11am at St. Clement Church: 4536 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45217. 11:00 Mass to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati.
