Janice Armstrong (nee Bailey), 97, a longtime resident of Springdale, passed away on June 17, 2021.
Beloved wife of the late Charles R. Armstrong. Devoted mother of Charles R. (Karen) Armstrong, Jr. and Glenn (Janice) Armstrong. Loving grandmother of Randall, Donald, Matthew (Laurie), Daniel (Katie), Ryan, Bradley, and Meagan Armstrong. Great-grandmother of Dominic, Nicholas, Eleanor, Ophelia, Henry, Caroline, and Audrey.
Janice lived a happy and full life, in spite of a very challenging childhood. Born in East Brady, PA, her father died from complications from appendicitis when she was an infant, and subsequently she and her mother resided with her maternal grandmother and grandfather. An avid singer, she graduated high school in 1941 and spent the following years attending business school and singing in local performances to entertain soldiers in the training camps proximate to East Brady. In 1945, she moved to Verona, PA and took an office position at the Gulf Oil Corporation Research Campus nearby. She continued to perform, and also volunteered in the community as part of the Verona Junior Club. In 1953, She was elected Junior Club President, and honored for her services with a dinner at the Penn Lincoln Hotel. In 1956, she married Charles Richard (Dick) Armstrong.
In 1963, she and her husband moved to Springdale, OH and she continued to engage in the community as well as raise her children. She joined the Springdale Presbyterian Church, and was a long-tenured member of the choir and ultimately part of the leadership committee. She also served with the Springdale Elementary PTA, and sang with the Springdale Women’s Choir. For many years she enjoyed playing bridge with the neighbors, bowling at Princeton Bowl, playing Bingo at St. Michaels, and having picnics and dinners with family and friends. Once her children had grown, she became a doting grandmother spending many enjoyable days teaching and playing with her grandchildren, and hosting family dinners. She and Dick used their golden years to travel and visit with family, until their age and health ultimately limited their travels. After the passing of her husband in 2015, Janice moved to West Chester to spend her remaining years with her son and daughter-in-law, where she continued to play cards and attend musical events.
